Heuristic knowledge informs Dr. Viloria's research agenda. In that case, place-based educational leadership and local agency as a means to preserve diversity and foster educational equity in both rural and non-rural schools drive her research interests. Dr. Viloria's primary research goal is to prepare educational leaders equipped with research-based culturally responsive leadership practices and (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-based knowledge to lead in public school systems. STEM education is important to her because by 2020, there will be approximately four million STEM jobs available in the United States (Unidos US, n.d.). According to (Rendón, Nora, Bledsoe, & Kanagala) “this prospect represents a significant opportunity that may be missed unless Latinxs increase their participation and completion rates in STEM education. STEM fields of study have been key areas where Latinxs have not fared well, and a number of inequities need to be considered to explain underrepresentation” (pg. 8, 2019)
